Two courthouses stand side by side on Federal Street in Salem, Massachusetts, the older one recalling an earlier era of county building and the newer one showing the larger, more formal style that county governments favored in the early 1900s. Salem served as the seat of Essex County, so the pairing captures a period when the county's courts were in transition between buildings. The image is a glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to record American towns and streets between about 1900 and 1915. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a gift in 1949, preserving a clear view of the street as it looked around 1910.
