Federal soldiers stand at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia, a small county seat that became the site of Robert E. Lee's surrender to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865. The negative is a wet collodion glass plate, a process that required the photographer to coat and expose the plate quickly, which makes outdoor scenes of this period especially valuable. The image was issued by the firm E. & H.T. Anthony, one of the best-known American suppliers of photographs during the war, and it comes from a larger selection of Civil War photographs compiled by Hirst D. Milhollen and Donald H. Mugridge.
