At Appomattox Court House, this house is where Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant met on April 9, 1865, and where Lee agreed to surrender the Army of Northern Virginia. Its owner, Wilmer McLean, had moved his family away from the fighting at Manassas, only to see the war arrive at his door again. The glass negative comes from the Library of Congress's Civil War collection, and its sleeve gives the caption as the McLean house. Earlier cataloging credited Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now uncertain.
