Appomattox Court House in Virginia is the setting here, and the place is what gives this view its weight: it was the village where Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant in April 1865, effectively ending the main Confederate field army. The glass negative was made the same year, and the courthouse and soldiers it shows belong to the final weeks of the war. The record also notes that the photographer was formerly attributed to Alexander Gardner, a detail that reflects how many Civil War images have had their authorship revised as scholars have studied the collections.
