The McLean house at Appomattox Court House is the building where Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, effectively ending the main Confederate field army's war. Photographed the same year, this glass negative shows the dwelling as it stood after the surrender, when the village had become a symbol of the war's close. Notice that the picture records a plain residence rather than the courthouse named in its title, a reminder of how the setting was defined by the meeting that took place inside it.
