Appomattox Court House in Virginia is the village where Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, effectively ending the main Confederate field army of the Civil War. The brick courthouse that stands in this view was the seat of Appomattox County, and it gave its name to the surrender that took place in the nearby McLean house. Views of the courthouse became widely circulated in the decades after the war, as veterans and tourists sought out the site where the conflict had closed. The record for this print is thin, and its date and maker are unverified, so the image is best read as a document of how the village was remembered rather than a firm record of a particular year.
