Wiesbaden's courthouse stands in Hesse-Nassau, the Prussian province whose capital became this spa town in 1868. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that transferred photographs onto stone in several tints, and it was a popular way to show German towns to American buyers. Detroit Publishing Company sold this view through its 1905 catalog of German scenes as print number 8671, and the record dates the original photograph to between about 1890 and 1900. Notice the soft color and the street setting, which were meant to make a provincial German town look inviting.
