Eastville, the seat of Northampton County on Virginia's Eastern Shore, has anchored its courthouse square since the colonial period, and this print turns from the square to the building's interior. The county was one of the original eight shires created in Virginia in 1634, so its court has met in some form for nearly four centuries. Photographs from the mid-1970s, when many historic courthouses were being surveyed and documented, often focus on woodwork such as paneling, railings, and doors, since these features show construction methods and the changes made over time.
