The Hampshire County Courthouse in Northampton, Massachusetts, is the subject of this view, a glass-plate negative made around 1904 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-format pictures of American towns and landmarks. Northampton was the seat of Hampshire County, and the courthouse served as the center of county legal business, so the building's stately presence on its street reflects the civic importance of the county seat at the turn of the twentieth century. Because the negative was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, the image carries a degree of sharp architectural detail that smaller formats could not match.
