The courthouse in Troy, New York, is the subject of this glass negative, one of the large 8 by 10 inch plates the Detroit Publishing Company used for its travel views. The company's catalog dating places the image around 1905, when such views were widely sold as postcards and souvenir prints of American towns. Troy, a river city on the Hudson, grew rich in the nineteenth century from iron, bell foundries, and collar manufacturing, and its civic buildings reflect that prosperity. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
