This view shows the Jefferson County Courthouse in Birmingham, Alabama, a city founded only in 1871 that grew rapidly on iron, coal and steel. A civic building of this scale signaled the permanence the young industrial city wanted to project. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many travel and town views in the early twentieth century.
