This aerial view looks down on Birmingham, Alabama, with the court house and the public library as its main landmarks. The photograph is dated around October 1934, though that date comes from a caption card and has not been independently verified. Birmingham had grown quickly from its founding in 1871 as an iron and steel center, and by the 1930s its downtown civic buildings marked the city's ambitions as a regional hub. The print was made by Aero-graphic Corporation of Louisville, Kentucky, a firm known for commercial aerial photographs of American cities in that period.
