The county courthouse anchors this view of Ann Arbor, with the street stretching past it and the surrounding town filling the frame. As the seat of Washtenaw County and a short distance from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in these years mixed legal business, academic life and local trade. The Detroit Publishing Company, which traveled widely in the early 1900s recording American towns and streets for sale as views and postcards, made the picture on a large glass dry plate. The 8 by 10 inch negative keeps fine detail in the building's architecture and the streetscape that a smaller image would lose.
