The Hampden County Courthouse in Springfield, Massachusetts, is the subject of this c1908 view, captured on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed towns, landmarks and scenery across the United States in the early twentieth century, made the image as part of a large survey of American places. Courthouses of this era often served as civic centers where county business, trials and public records were housed, so the building reflects the county's authority as much as its architecture. Its inclusion in a series of civic buildings offers a useful record of how these public structures looked at the start of the century.
