Few buildings anchored Boston's legal life as firmly as the Suffolk County Court House at Court Street and Court Square, seen here in a photograph dated around 1909 and copyrighted by James Murray. Designed by Charles Bulfinch and completed in 1810, the granite building served as the county's courthouse for generations and stood as one of the city's most recognizable civic landmarks. By the time of this picture, its surroundings had changed considerably, and the view offers a glimpse of a public building that had outlasted much of the neighborhood around it.
