Morris, the seat of Stevens County in west-central Minnesota, is the place pictured here, with its courthouse standing as the civic center of the town around 1909. The photographer, J.B. Anderson, registered the view with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is why a print of this small-town building ended up in the national collections. Courthouses of this period were often the most ambitious structures in rural county seats, meant to signal permanence and public authority. The dating and attribution come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
