Greenwood, the seat of Leflore County in the Mississippi Delta, takes its county's name from Greenwood LeFlore, a Choctaw leader of mixed heritage. This photograph by the studio of C.E. Gillespie & Co. shows the courthouse there, though its caption card leaves the date blank. Courthouses of this kind were usually the most prominent public buildings in their county seats, housing records, courtrooms and local officials. Historians often consult such views to see how small Southern towns presented their civic authority.
