Barbourville, the seat of Knox County in the Cumberland Mountains of southeastern Kentucky, is pictured here through its courthouse, a building that anchored county government and public life in a region where the courthouse was often the main civic landmark. The photograph was made by Caufield & Shook, a Louisville studio that produced many views of Kentucky towns in the early twentieth century. Its caption card also lists "political campaigns" among its subject tags, which suggests courthouse grounds were a common setting for rallies and stump speeches. The date, around 1930, is recorded from an old caption card and has not been independently verified.
