Few courthouse towns in eastern Virginia came through the war unmarked, and this stereograph records the ruins of houses at Charles City Court House in 1864, amid the wider upheaval of that year's campaigns in Virginia. It is a glass stereograph made with the wet collodion process, a pair of nearly identical exposures meant to be viewed together for a sense of depth. The photographer, James F. Gibson, worked in the Virginia theater during the war. The village sits in Charles City County on the James River east of Richmond, and the picture shows it in the condition the fighting had left behind.
