Wilcox's Landing, on the James River near the Charles City Court House in Virginia, is the setting for this 1864 stereograph of a field telegraph station. Union forces relied on portable telegraph lines like this one to pass orders between headquarters and the army's scattered units during the campaigns of 1864. The image was published by E. & H.T. Anthony, a New York firm that sold stereo views to a wide public, and it was made as a wet collodion glass negative. Its subject heading links it to the Wilderness fighting, a reminder of how quickly communications had to follow an advancing army.
