Drawn in pencil and dated May 12, 1864, this sketch shows a field hospital of the Fifth Corps, under Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren, at Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia. That day brought some of the fiercest fighting of the Overland Campaign, as Union troops attacked the Confederate line at the salient later known as the Bloody Angle, and the wounded were carried back to surgeons working in tents and makeshift stations near the front. Field hospitals like this one were often crowded, rough and short on supplies, so a drawing made on the spot offers a rare view of the medical side of the battle. The sketch is initialed "EF" and was given to the Library of Congress by J.P. Morgan in 1919.
