Titled *A stormy march*, this pencil drawing shows artillery struggling through bad weather on the way to Spotsylvania Court House, and it is dated May 12, 1864. That day fell in the heart of the fighting around the courthouse during the Overland Campaign, when Union and Confederate troops clashed at the Bloody Angle while rain turned the roads to mud that slowed guns and wagons. The sketch belongs to a Civil War drawing collection given to the Library of Congress in 1919, and the phrase "A hard pull," noted on its mat, hints at how grueling such marches were for horses and crews.
