Few places in the Civil War saw wounded men gather as quickly as Spotsylvania Court House, and this pencil drawing records a field hospital serving the 5th Corps under Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren on May 12, 1864. That was the day Union troops launched a massive assault on the Confederate position known as the Mule Shoe, one of the bloodiest episodes of Grant's Overland Campaign. Field hospitals like this one were set up close to the lines, where surgeons sorted and treated men while fighting continued nearby. The drawing is initialed "EF," and it came to the Library of Congress as a gift from J.P. Morgan in 1919.
