Faneuil Hall, the brick meeting house on Dock Square in Boston, is the building this engraving sets out to show, and its crowded market scene places the hall in the bustle of the stalls and carts that filled the square beneath it. The hall was given to the town by merchant Peter Faneuil in 1742 and served for generations as a marketplace on its ground floor and a gathering space for town meetings above. Its long role in colonial and revolutionary politics made it a natural subject for printmakers, and the crowds drawn here show how closely commerce and public debate were tied together in the life of the city.
