Roosevelt and his successor, William Howard Taft, are shown riding together in a carriage on their way to the Capitol, the ride that traditionally linked an outgoing president to the inauguration of the next one. The date on the record, March 4, 1909, matches Taft's inauguration day, though the title comes from caption data the Bain News Service recorded and has not been independently verified. Bain's agency supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and this glass negative reflects that working press world. The scene is worth a close look for the formal, public nature of a peaceful transfer of power in Washington.
