Rockport, the seat of Atchison County in northwestern Missouri, was a farm town in 1908, and its economy rested on the surrounding fields. Corn, wheat, oats and livestock raised on the rolling prairie supplied the local grain elevators and stockyards, and hogs and cattle moved to distant markets by rail. The depot, the merchants on the square and the wagons of farm families arriving on market days shaped the rhythm of daily life. Like many small towns in the region, Rockport was adjusting to a world where railroads, not river traffic, carried most goods. Stark's panoramic photograph shows the town as its residents knew it, with its streets, storefronts and houses spread across the landscape.
