Unionville, the seat of Putnam County in northeast Missouri, was in 1908 a farm town whose fortunes rose and fell with the countryside around it. Corn, wheat, and livestock, especially hogs and cattle, moved through its shipping pens and local markets, and the county's farmers came to town on Saturdays to trade, sell, and visit. The courthouse and the business blocks around the square made the town the center of county government, courts, and commerce, and its residents would have known it first as the place where the county's business got done. Like many small Missouri county seats of that era, Unionville also drew people to church gatherings, lodge meetings, school events, and traveling lecture and entertainment programs, which gave the town its social life between harvests.
