In 1908, Unionville sat in Putnam County in northeast Missouri, and its residents followed the presidential race between William Howard Taft and William Jennings Bryan closely, as they did most national contests. Rural Missouri was then mostly Democratic, so local arguments over tariffs, railroads, and the price of farm goods tended to play out at the county courthouse and in the town's newspapers. The Good Roads movement was gaining support across the state, and farm families pressed for better dirt and gravel roads so that wagons could reach town in wet weather. Rural free delivery was also spreading, bringing mail carriers out to farmhouses and tying the surrounding countryside more closely to the county seat.
