Freemasonry's Richmond lodges were housed in a substantial downtown temple, and this view records the building as it looked in the years between 1910 and 1920. Fraternal orders such as the Masons were a major part of civic life in American cities at the time, and their halls often served as meeting places for business, charity, and ceremony as well as lodge activity. The picture was made as an 8 x 10 inch glass negative, a format favored by commercial view makers of the period for its sharp detail. It came from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose catalog documented American towns and buildings in the early twentieth century.
