The cruiser pictured is the U.S.S. Cincinnati, a steel protected cruiser commissioned in 1894, the same year this glass negative is dated. The Navy built her as part of a push to replace aging wooden and early iron vessels with modern steel warships, and she later served in the Spanish-American War. The photograph comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely recording American landscapes, towns and ships in the 1890s and early 1900s. The negative's copyright notice, dated 1894, shows how quickly photographers captured new naval technology for a public eager to see it.
