The ship in this glass negative is the U.S.S. *Cincinnati*, one of the steel protected cruisers the United States began building in the early 1890s as it modernized a navy that had relied on wooden vessels. The image was made around 1894, the year the cruiser entered service, and the negative carries a copyright notice from that year. It was produced by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-scale photographic views of places and things across the country. Its 8 by 10 inch plate size gives it fine detail for a period ship portrait.
