This glass negative shows the U.S.S. Cincinnati, a steel protected cruiser of the U.S. Navy, a ship named for the Ohio city rather than a local landmark. The record dates it to about 1894, the years the ship entered service as part of the Navy's post-Civil War push to replace wooden warships with steel vessels. Its attribution to a photographer named Hart rests on the negative's catalog number within the Detroit Publishing Company's large collection, which documented American railroads, scenery, and cities in the early twentieth century. The picture is worth a close look for its record of how the Navy presented its new fleet before the Spanish-American War.
