Seated at the center of a large, formally arranged group, Sun Yat-sen is the clear focal point of this 1910 photograph. He was then living in exile, traveling among Chinese communities abroad to raise money and build support for an uprising against the Qing dynasty. Within a year the 1911 revolution brought down the Qing, and in 1912 he became provisional president of the new Republic of China. Formal group portraits like this one were a common way for organizers to record their allies and supporters.
