Here Ito Hirobumi is shown full length and seated among his household, with his wife, a son and his grandsons, a more domestic arrangement than the formal solo portraits usually made of Japan's most powerful statesmen. Ito served four times as prime minister and was a principal author of the Meiji Constitution of 1889. The photograph dates to about 1904, when he was a senior elder statesman during the Russo-Japanese War, and it presents him as a family patriarch as much as a political leader. He was assassinated in Harbin in 1909.
