Few houses in the capital carry as much history as the Octagon, the angled brick townhouse at the corner of New York Avenue and 18th Street NW. William Thornton designed it for Colonel John Tayloe III around 1799, and after the British burned the White House in 1814, President Madison lived there and ratified the Treaty of Ghent in early 1815. This glass negative, made by the National Photo Company around 1918 to 1920, shows the house during the decades the American Institute of Architects has occupied it. Faint streaks and blemishes from the aging glass coating are visible across the plate.
