Few houses in the capital have a more eventful history than the Octagon House, a brick mansion at the corner of New York Avenue and 18th Street NW. Built in the late 1790s for Colonel John Tayloe III and associated with architect William Thornton, it became a temporary residence for President James Madison after the British burned the White House in 1814. The treaty ending the War of 1812 was ratified in its rooms the following year. This glass negative, made by the National Photo Company between about 1910 and 1926, records the building in the early twentieth century, when its unusual eight-sided plan already set it apart from the rectangular houses around it.
