The Octagon stands at the corner of New York Avenue and 18th Street Northwest, its eight-sided plan setting it apart from the rectangular houses around it. Built around 1800 for Colonel John Tayloe III, it is generally attributed to William Thornton, the first architect of the Capitol, and it later sheltered President James Madison after the British burned the White House in 1814. This glass negative from the National Photo Company, made sometime between 1910 and 1926, records the house in the early twentieth century, though faint streaks and blemishes across the glass show the deterioration of its original coatings.
