Newburgh, on the Hudson's west bank, is the setting here, and the house shown is the one long identified as Washington's headquarters during the army's encampment there. The title dates the scene to 1780, but Washington's longest stay at Newburgh came in 1782 and 1783, when the army wintered there while peace talks dragged on and the Newburgh Addresses circulated among the officers. Nathaniel Currier published this hand-colored lithograph in New York, one of many patriotic views of Revolutionary sites sold to a popular market in the decades after the war's centennial.
