Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River, is the probable setting for this view taken from the casino, a building that served as a social and recreational center for park visitors. The picture survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, the large-format medium that commercial photographers relied on in the early twentieth century. It belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company's collection, which recorded American cities and landscapes between the 1890s and the early 1920s. Worth noticing is the vantage point: the camera looks outward from the casino over the park grounds, presenting the island as a place for leisure and public outings.
