South Salina Street was one of the main commercial thoroughfares of downtown Syracuse, New York, and this glass negative records the street as a working business district around the turn of the twentieth century. It was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed towns, scenery and public works across the country and sold the views to railroads, publishers and travelers. Catalog notes date the plate to between 1900 and 1906, and the company's numbering helps place it within that span. The 8 by 10 inch negative was given in 1949 by the State Historical Society of Colorado, and it is worth noticing how much of the street's commercial life the camera captured in a single view.
