Few photographers traveled farther for their stereo views than the Magnolia Hotel in St. Augustine, Florida, the nation's oldest continuously occupied European settlement, founded in 1565. By the late 1880s, the town had become a winter destination for visitors from the North, and hotels like this one catered to them. This card was produced by George Barker of Niagara Falls, New York, whose stereographs were sold as parlor entertainment. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical photographs merge into a single three-dimensional scene of the hotel and its grounds.
