The image advertises a Federal theater Project production in Los Angeles, and its title refers to the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, known as the AAA, whose 1933 program paid farmers to cut planted acreage and destroy surplus crops and livestock to raise prices during the Depression. The play belonged to the Living Newspaper format, which dramatized current events and public policy, often with a pointed view. Its stark poster style, printed by silkscreen, reflects the Works Progress Administration's wider effort to employ artists while bringing dramatic and civic debate to ordinary audiences.
