This poster advertises a Federal theater Project staging of *Alien Corn*, the 1933 drama by Sidney Howard, a playwright known for social dramas of the 1920s and 1930s. The play follows an American musician who goes abroad to study, and its European setting gave it a more serious, unsettled tone than typical stage fare of the time. The Federal theater Project was part of the Works Progress Administration, created to put unemployed actors, designers and stagehands back to work during the Depression. Its poster artists often used silkscreen, a relatively inexpensive method that allowed bold flat color and large runs of printed sheets.
