Rather than a skyline or a monument, this 1936 color woodblock poster centers on the shipping and wharves of the Port of Philadelphia, a working Delaware River waterfront in the middle of the Great Depression. It was produced under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which employed artists to design posters promoting public events and services. Domenic Rotoli cut the blocks, and a date stamp of March 27, 1937, on the back records when the sheet was handled, about a year after its design date.
