Carpenters' Hall, the brick meeting house on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, is the subject here, and it is the building where the First Continental Congress met in 1774 to protest British policies before the Revolution. This 1936 silkscreen poster was produced under the Work Projects Administration and sponsored by the Federal theater Project, and its tourism theme shows how the New Deal arts programs promoted American cities and their historic sites during the Depression. Look at how the flat, bold color fields and simplified shapes of the hall give a historic landmark the graphic punch of a modern advertisement.
