The poster's headline puts a hard number up front: reported syphilis cases among people under 19 are given as 100,000. Printed in silkscreen in 1936 for the New York State health effort, it belongs to the Work Projects Administration's poster program, which used federal relief artists to produce public health and civic messages during the Depression. Venereal disease was a frank and often avoided subject in that period, so a blunt "face the facts" appeal aimed at young people was a deliberate break from the usual reticence. The sponsorship by a New York city department also shows how local agencies used these posters to reach the public.
