A 1936 silkscreen poster from the Work Projects Administration, titled "Prevent syphilis in marriage," addresses a health concern that public messaging of the period often handled with restraint. The record tentatively credits the design to M. Lewis Jacobs and lists the New York City Department of Correction as sponsor, showing how city agencies used federal arts programs to carry public health messages. In the 1930s, many states, New York among them, required blood tests before a marriage license was issued, and posters like this one urged couples to get screened before the wedding. The back bears a July 1940 date stamp, indicating the sheet remained in agency files for several years after it was printed.
