Mobile, Alabama, in 1909 was the state's only real seaport, a city founded by French colonists in 1702 and later ruled in turn by Spain, Britain, and the United States. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad linked the port to inland Alabama and Tennessee, and its tracks ran close to the riverfront where freight moved between rail cars and ships. Electric streetcars carried clerks, dock hands, and shopkeepers along the main avenues, while the downtown business district gathered around the courthouse and Bienville Square. Residents of that day knew Mobile as the old Gulf city at the mouth of the Mobile River, proud of its age and its position on the water.
