In 1909, Mobile, Alabama, was one of the busiest seaports on the Gulf of Mexico, with its harbor on the Mobile River and its docks handling cotton, timber, and other goods bound for markets across the Atlantic and in the North. Lumber mills and shipping firms gave the city much of its work, and rail lines brought timber and farm products down to the waterfront. Mobile also prided itself on its long Mardi Gras tradition, with street parades and masked balls organized by social clubs that drew residents and visitors each winter. The city's wealth and waterfront were tied to the cotton and timber trades, and Mobile residents of that day knew their town as a port of commerce and a center of Gulf Coast society.
