Mobile, Alabama, in 1909 lay on the Mobile River a short distance above Mobile Bay, and its channel to the Gulf made it the state's principal port. Dredging kept the shipping lanes open, while oyster and shrimp boats worked the bay and tied fishermen to the same docks where larger vessels loaded. Many residents still remembered the Civil War, when Admiral David Farragut's fleet forced its way past the forts guarding the bay in 1864. Those who lived there thought of Mobile as an old Gulf town, proud of its history and of the water that had shaped its fortunes.
